Schools of the Sacred Heart Master Plan

Location: Grand Coteau, Louisiana

ACSW has worked closely with the Schools of the Sacred Heart through a charrette process to provide a master plan and program for the Academy of the Sacred Heart and St. John Berchmans. Opening it’s doors in 1821, the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau has provided a quality single gender education to Pre-Kindergarten thru 12th grade for over 185 years. Through the charrette process ACSW worked with the Schools of the Sacred Heart to study traditional campus planning, approach to campus design, place making, and place marking required to complement and enhance the historic campus.

The Schools of the Sacred Heart master plan, details an expansion of the existing Academy of the Sacred Heart campus to include a new girls high school, gym, performing arts building, and community residences The master plan also includes the campus of St. John Berchmans a single gender boys school which is currently located in temporary building on the existing campus. The design and approach to the St. John Berchmans boys schools is the primary focus for Schools of the Sacred Heart master plan which is to include a new boys high school, elementary school, gym, cafeteria, and chapel. The master plan document also outlines expansion of the existing infrastructure needed to accommodate for the planned development of the campus. It was critical that a complete understanding of values, vision, existing site elements, and ideology was understood to locate and program the campus plan to meet the client’s needs.

ACSW completed a 50 page master plan program for marketing and documentation of the topics discussed and input that was provided in the charrette. This document included site documentation, process drawings, needs and projections, goals, campus and building programs, cost projections, phasing diagrams, and final perspective and bird’s eye renderings. The result is a impressive document that assists the client to further educate the public and as a reference as they move forward with fund raising and implementation.
